Competition Round Up

19 Apr 2010

It has been a disappointing end to a season that held so much expectation for both the club and individuals.  It was always going to be a tough act to follow last seasons unbeaten record and with key players either prioritising final year study or on placment, the pool of experienced golfers was as small as ever.  The season therefore provided an opportunity for some first and second year students to get into the thick of things and experience student golf right from the off.  Hopefully this season will stand them in good stead for next year...

Irish Colleges League Finals, Glasson Golf Hotel, 29th & 30th Match 2010

The team needed to secure a victory in the final group game at home to Trinity College in order to progress to the finals at Glasson Golf Hotel, Athlone.  A 3-1 win put the boys top of group C and into a quarter final match against DIT.  A fine performance from a very inexperienced Ulster team ensured we came out on top with a 3-2 win to progress to the semi-finals against UCD.  Unfortunately, UCD were too strong this time round with a 4-1 win over the team to send them crashing out.

R&A Foundation Scholarship Tournament, St. Andrews, 5th & 6th April 2010

Paul Doherty was our only representative at this year’s competition as a result of a high number of entries from participating Universities involved in the scholarship programme.  Paul travelled to St. Andrews full of confidence following some great scoreing around Ballyliffin the weekend before.  However, terrible weather conditions and a very talent field made progress up the leaderboard slow.

BUCS Individual Championships, Dundonald Links Troon, 13th - 15th April 2010

Jack Owens and Zach Rushe represented N. Ireland Universities at this years Championships which is the cummulation of months of qualifying across the home countries.  Representatives from England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland battle it out for the top qualifying spots for the finals, which brings together the best of best in student golf.  Despite fantastic weather conditions the boys struggled to find form and were overshadowed on the leaderboard.
